Google AI Mode cites pages that already rank because it builds answers from Google’s own search results: in a 2026 benchmark, 93% of its citations came from the organic top 10. The way into AI answers on Google is not a separate trick. It is ranking in the top 10 for the many sub-questions an AI answer is assembled from, and that is exactly what topical authority produces.
The data
The CiteLens benchmark ran 320 templated buyer queries through four AI platforms in June 2026 and checked every cited source against the same query’s organic results. As reported by AuthorityTech:
- Google AI Mode: 93% of citations from Google’s top 10
- Perplexity: 89%
- Claude: 53%
- ChatGPT: 30%
The same piece cites a separate analysis of 114,034 URL and query pairs that found pages in Google’s top 3 were 7.82 times more likely to be cited by AI engines, and a study of 6.77 million sessions showing that AI discovery inside Google drives more AI-influenced traffic than all standalone assistants combined.
Why AI Mode behaves this way
AI Mode is a retrieval system with a writer on top. When you ask it something, it does not invent sources. It runs searches, a process known as query fan-out, retrieves the strongest results for each sub-query from Google’s index, and writes an answer grounded in those documents. If a page isn’t retrieved for a sub-query, it can’t be cited for it.
Three consequences follow:
- Ranking is the entry ticket. The same quality and relevance systems that order classic results decide which documents the model sees.
- One answer, many rankings. A single AI answer may draw on five or six sub-queries. The site cited most is the one ranking across most of them, not the one ranking first for the head term.
- Passages win, not pages. Within retrieved pages, the model quotes passages that resolve one sub-question cleanly. A page built in tight, answer-first sections offers more quotable passages.
The topical authority explanation
Put those together and the pattern is clear. The sites AI Mode cites again and again are the ones that rank for the whole cluster of questions around a topic. That is the definition of topical authority: a search engine’s confidence that a site covers a subject completely and reliably, so it ranks the site across the topic rather than for one keyword.
A site with one excellent article on “what is a topical map” might rank for that query and get cited once. A site that also covers how to build one, the tools, the methodology, common mistakes and how maps compare with keyword research will rank across the fan-out, and appear in far more AI answers on the subject. Coverage compounds.
What this means for your content plan
- Stop chasing “GEO hacks” for Google. On AI Mode, the work is the same as ranking well; Google itself says optimising for AI search is still SEO.
- Map the fan-out. List the sub-questions behind your most valuable prompts and make sure each one resolves to a page or a clearly headed section. A topical map is the tool for this.
- Write answer-first. Open every section with a two or three sentence answer before the detail.
- Treat ChatGPT separately. With only 30% of citations from Google’s top 10, ChatGPT rewards entity consensus across sources like Reddit and Wikipedia. See how each AI platform chooses citations.
- Measure it. Use Search Console’s new AI performance report to see which pages earn AI impressions, then compare with organic clicks.

Frequently asked questions
Does Google AI Mode only cite top-ranking pages?
Almost always. A June 2026 benchmark found 93% of AI Mode citations came from pages in Google’s organic top 10 for the same query.
How do I get cited in Google AI Mode?
Rank in the top 10 for the sub-questions your topic fans out into, and structure pages so each section answers one question in its first few sentences. Topical authority is the most reliable route.
Is getting cited by ChatGPT the same?
No. Only about 30% of ChatGPT citations matched Google’s top 10 in the same benchmark. ChatGPT relies more on consensus across sources such as Wikipedia, Reddit and industry publications.
