Schema markup doesn’t create semantic relevance — it confirms it. Structured data tells a search or AI system explicitly what you’ve already made true through content: which entity a page is about, what type of entity it is, and how it relates to other entities on the page. It’s a confirmation layer, not a substitute for the content actually covering the topic.

Common misconception — adding schema to a thin page doesn’t make the page more semantically relevant. It just makes the thinness machine-readable.

03The mistake worth avoiding

Marking a page up as a type it isn’t — FAQPage schema on a page that doesn’t structurally answer discrete questions, Product schema on a service page with no fixed price — creates a mismatch between what the markup claims and what the content delivers. That mismatch is a stronger negative signal than having no schema at all.

Rule of thumb: the schema type should be obvious from reading the page with no markup. If you have to force the mapping, the content structure needs to change, not the schema.
